The lawyers will return to the stage to face the engineers in the third annual Engineers v Lawyers Mock Debate, with the trophy and ultimate bragging rights up for grabs.
After the engineers claimed victory in 2024, the lawyers responded with a win in 2025, making the series locked at one-all and setting the scene for a highly competitive showdown.
This year’s topic tackles one of Queensland’s biggest talking points:
Brisbane 2032 Olympics: A State’s crowning jewel or an unnecessary distraction?
In a deliberate twist, Team Lawyers will argue that the Games are an unnecessary distraction, while Sequana will champion Brisbane 2032 as a once-in-a-generation opportunity for Queensland.
Hosted by Queensland Major Contractors Association CEO Andrew Chapman, the free event will be held on Tuesday 18 August at The Brisbane Club from 5.30pm.
With the score tied at one-all, the audience will once again decide who walks away with the trophy and, perhaps more importantly, the bragging rights. In the courtroom, we might be masters of persuasion, but on debate night, it’s the audience that delivers the final verdict.
Helix Legal CEO Janelle Kerrisk said the mock debate had become a unique opportunity for Brisbane’s engineering, legal and business communities to come together.
“One of the reasons this event continues to grow is that it brings together intelligent humans from different professions to challenge ideas, test assumptions and enjoy a bit of friendly rivalry,” she said.
“A good mock debate topic doesn’t need one side to be obviously right. It needs both sides to have enough credible ammunition that the audience could be persuaded either way, and Brisbane 2032 certainly fits that description.”
Expect an evening of friendly rivalry and no shortage of persuasive arguments as both teams battle to win the decider!
